First Literacy Workshop Registration (two sessions via Zoom)
Pronouncing General American English
Friday, May 7 and May 14, 2021
1:00 - 2:30 PM
Zoom two-part virtual workshop
(Zoom link will be included in your registration confirmation and reminder emails.)
This introductory course in pronouncing General American English (GenAm) will help educators provide instruction for students who want to acquire GenAm speech patterns. The course will focus on a subset of GenAm phonology including what the instructor has coined as "Problem Pairs", vowels and consonants that are similar and often present as accented to native General American English speakers. Participants will learn techniques for practicing these phonemes with their students, as well as tips for explaining sound articulation.
After this two-part workshop, participants will be able to
- explain the tongue, jaw, and lip placement for a subset of General American English vowels,
- demonstrate the difference between voiced and unvoiced consonants,
- conduct classroom activities that elicit targeted speech patterns and promote ear training, and
- give their students feedback on their pronunciation in a positive and culturally sensitive way.
