Workshop Description:
Many advanced ESOL and High School Equivalency (HSE) students struggle to enter college-level composition courses. This workshop offers tips to help students “find their voices,” and build confidence in their writing abilities — a “bridge” between conventional instruction of the writing to the more rigorous demands of the College Composition classroom. The workshop will also include an opportunity for participants to experience the Writer’s Workshop model with facilitated writing time and group feedback following established protocols.
Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will learn how to:
- identify existing knowledge gaps in the content area of writing,
- assess their institution's current ability to address writing for ABE and ESOL learners,
- design and implement a writer's workshop to bridge the knowledge gap for a subset of learners.
Presenter:
Jennifer Rampsi holds a BA in English and a Masters in Education, and has spent the past fourteen years devoted to education and the opportunity to serve diverse communities. She currently teaches multiple subjects at the Brockton Adult Learning Center as a HiSET and GED instructor. Jennifer recently created and implemented a writer's workshop to serve a specific population of adult learners at the ALC, giving her the opportunity to work within her passion for writing while providing learners with a space to find their own voice and become empowered by their writing.
This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
