Workshop Description:
Do you wish to increase the amount your students read or create a stronger reading culture in your classroom? Have you encouraged your students to read more, but your efforts fall flat? Do you lack the time or resources, or are just not sure where to start? In this workshop, learn practical classroom routines that have successfully worked with adult emergent readers in the ABE classroom and hear one student’s perspective from how she went from non-reader to devourer of books. The strategies and ideas presented in this training are adaptable for use in both the ESOL and ABE classrooms with English-learning and native English-speaking students. 

Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:

  • explain the importance of increasing the amount students read in the adult education classroom,
  • utilize strategies that engage adult students’ curiosity and interest in books,
  • develop routines that make reading part of every class, and
  • use technology tools to scaffold reading for reluctant, low-level, or disengaged students.
     

Presenter:
Brooke Machado provides consulting and training to adult education teachers around Massachusetts on instruction, curriculum, and implementation of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE). She taught both ESOL and ABE from Beginning Literacy to High Adult Secondary Education in and around Boston for 18 years. Brooke has developed curriculum for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MA DESE) and the SABES Professional Development Center for ELA. She served as a lead teacher and trainer for the Massachusetts’ Teaching Skills That Matter in Adult Education (TSTM) initiative and is passionate about designing learning that enhances the lives and well-being of the students with whom she has worked. Brooke holds a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Boston. 

This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
