First Literacy Workshop Registration (two sessions via Zoom)

Moving Beyond Student Persistence to Student Success

Friday, February 11 and
Wednesday, February 16, 2022
1:00 - 2:30 PM (via Zoom)

Workshop Description:
This two part workshop will review current research on persistence, retention, and student success with a focus on adult literacy. In light of Dweck's growth mindset, we will explore the implications for policy and practice to improve persistence, by identifying student resources and approaches which can contribute to student success. We will explore issues of self-agency and motivation, resilience and grit, and the obstacles that prevent students from persisting and succeeding. Practical classroom tips and approaches will assist educators in leading students towards success.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to

  • define persistence, resilience, grit;
  • develop skills and scripts for challenging learners' negative self-assumptions;
  • articulate ways to manage learners' resistance.
