Workshop Description:
"Scaffolding” describes all the temporary supports we provide our students so they can tackle steeper learning curves. It is essential to effective instruction and yet often overlooked in our lesson plans. Examples of scaffolding include activating student knowledge, chunking learning into smaller bits, using multiple modalities, modeling, and backward design of our lessons. In this two-part workshop we will consider these questions: Why is scaffolding essential to effective instruction? What does it look like? How can we use it more?  

Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:

  • explain the role of scaffolding in effective instruction,
  • identify multiple and varied examples of instructional scaffolding, and
  • integrate scaffolding techniques into a lesson design.

Presenter:
Sarah Lynn is an ESOL instructor, teacher educator, curriculum designer, and ESOL textbook author in the Boston area. She facilitates workshops on learning and instruction and teaches part-time at the Cambridge Community Learning Center.  

This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
