Workshop Description:
Who are the immigrant and refugee students in your classroom, how can you support them, and how do they contribute to our communities and classrooms? In this workshop, learn about foreign-born students in Massachusetts including recent Afghan and Ukrainian refugees, main themes regarding immigration, and current policy updates that may impact your students. We will reflect on and model culturally sustaining ways to elevate all students’ voices and stories in the classroom. 

Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:

  • explain how immigrants are assets to their community and classroom,
  • describe main themes regarding immigration today,
  • identify strategies for combatting disinformation,
  • utilize an asset-based approach with their students, and
  • identify strategies for lifting up foreign and U.S.-born students' stories in the classroom.

Presenters:
Denzil Mohammed is an intercultural communications specialist who works to build understanding across boundaries utilizing a research- and asset-based approach. As director of the Public Education Institute at The Immigrant Learning Center in Malden, MA, he manages specialized online education, local and national research initiatives, and collaborative public events that promote immigrants as economic and social assets to America. He’s been published by The New England Journal of Higher Education and serves on advisory boards for the New Americans Integration Institute and the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement. He is a frequent speaker on immigrant integration, demographics, entrepreneurship and education.  

This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
