Workshop Description:
This interactive workshop will review current research on persistence, retention, and student success, and explore issues of self-agency and motivation, and the obstacles that prevent students from succeeding. Practical classroom tips and approaches will assist educators in leading students towards success.
Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
- Define persistence & six drivers of persistence
- Describe ways to encourage persistence in adult learners
- Articulate challenges and benefits of online learning
- Define resilience & grit
- Develop skills and scripts for challenging learners' negative self-assumptions
- Articulate ways to manage learners’ resistance
Presenter:
Mike Boutin, EdD, ACC, is Assistant Dean for Faculty and Student Success in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Charlestown, MA. In his role as Assistant Dean, he coordinates and provides student support dealing with issues of stress, time management, study skills, group and teamwork, and development of soft skills. He collaborates with faculty around a host of student issues. He is also a certified ACC level Executive Coach, teaches Counseling Skills to speech pathologists, and is a frequent workshop presenter and speaker on a host of issues. He works part time as a Music Director in local church settings.
