Workshop Description:
This workshop will provide educators with facilitation techniques and activities that build relationships while developing English language competencies. Participants will engage in several activities that also help establish classroom norms, bridge cultural differences, facilitate fun and support language acquisition. Adaptation for the on-line environment will be considered.
Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will:
- explore community building activities educators can bring back to their instructional settings;
- learn strategies for fostering movement and fun in the classroom;
- participate in activities that engage learners while addressing content;
- become familiar with active learning concepts and methods;
- explore and discuss the various ways to establish classroom norms, expectations, and values.
Presenter:
Larry Childs has worked in the fields of Adventure and Experiential Education for over 35 years, from managing and training within humanitarian aid organizations in West Africa and as a teacher in Switzerland. Later he supported Outward Bound’s urban adaptations in Somerville and Boston, MA. Since 2006, as a senior trainer and consultant with Project Adventure and now as an independent consultant, he has been training around immersive, experiential approaches to team, educational and organizational challenges. Larry's work aims to heighten awareness and connection while addressing diverse themes from team effectiveness and emotional intelligence to conflict management. His adaptations of experiential learning span a wide range of cultural and linguistic settings across the US and abroad and with several immigrant serving organizations in Massachusetts.
This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
