(Please note: This is a two-part workshop. By registering you are committing to both sessions.)
Workshop Description:
Our Tutor Training program will provide tutors/volunteers skills to assist teachers in classrooms both virtual and in-person. The participants will gain new strategies to help their students become more confident and skillful. Objectives include developing understanding of the learning process, implementing new strategies for effective working relationships with supervising teachers and students. Participants will have continued coaching upon successful completion of class.
Participants will be able to:
Workshop Learning Objectives - Participants will:
- Build effective relationships with the teacher and students
- Understand the basics of instruction and teaching (e.g. process of comprehension, production, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation)
- Actively become involved in the learning process
- Communicate the material to others (without sharing answers or leading students)
- Assist teachers in-person as needed (e.g. recognize that learners will make mistakes and be patient as students problem solve)
- Assist teachers in remote settings (e.g. feel comfortable going in and out of breakout rooms, sharing the screen, working one-to-one and in small groups, explain material, be patient and know learners will make mistakes, etc.)
- Ask questions for understanding and clarification
- Receive continued instruction and training on a regular basis
- Have the opportunity to follow up with tutors 1-2 days per month and receive ongoing training
- Evaluate their performance
- Take short online assessments to offer suggestions for program improvement
Presenter:
Judithann Walz
Judithann has over twenty years as an English and writing teacher. She has lived, taught, and presented around the world and currently works with English for New Bostonians in Boston as a workplace ESOL teacher and with Framingham Adult ESL Plus in Framingham as their resident Advanced Reading and Writing teacher. She also runs Joy Among Wonder (JAW), a company that offers classes for people looking to write and publish their stories and a separate track for those looking to expand their intuition through clairvoyant classes, quantum design, and healing work. She is a published author and soon-to-be TED speaker. Judithann holds a Master’s in Business Administration in Marketing and a Bachelor’s in English and is working toward a Master’s in Creative Nonfiction. She is also TABE CLAS-E Writing Scoring, and BEST Plus certified.
This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
