Know Your Students' Workplace Rights

Workshop Description:
The workshop will cover the principal workplace issues encountered by low-income and immigrant workers: health and safety, discrimination, wage and hour violations and workers’ compensation. All workers are entitled to the same rights on the job; however, many employees in precarious situations are subject to abusive conditions and/or do not know where to turn for help. The workshop will present, in an interactive format, what are workers’ rights, the government agencies that enforce those rights, and actions workers can take to improve their working conditions. 

Learning Objectives: Participants will

• learn about many of the important workplace rights;
• understand what are the principal obstacles to exerting those rights;
• be able to refer their adult working students to the appropriate government and nonprofit organizations for assistance. 

Presenter: 
Richard Rabin was the director of the Occupational Lead Poisoning Registry at the Massachusetts Department of Labor for over 20 years. Most recently, he has volunteered as the trainer and technical consultant for the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, His main focus at MassCOSH has been to provide training to immigrants, minority workers and union members on health and safety and other workplace rights in both English and Spanish.  

This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
