
Encouraging Learner Autonomy and Motivation

In this workshop, we will explore methods of encouraging autonomy and boosting motivation in our English language learners. We will discuss how and why it’s important for language learners to take ownership of their progress and how instructors can empower them with strategies to ensure they reach their goals. Together, we will share our tried-and-true methods for helping learners set and achieve personal goals and stay consistent.

Presenter:
Jessica Caplice is an ESL instructor with more than ten years of experience teaching in person and online. She has a Master’s in TESOL from Arizona State University and a TEFL Certificate from the Boston Language Institute. Jessica has taught at English language institutions in Boston, including Kaplan International, FLS International, and GEOS Languages. She has also taught virtually for Open Hearts Learning Academy, Columbia College, and One World One Love, a non-profit organization. Jessica’s classes feature student-centered communicative teaching methods, engaging speaking activities, and curriculum tailored to adult learners’ real-world needs. Her coursework at Arizona State University focused on creating ELT Materials and key elements in encouraging learning autonomy.
This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.
