Pronunciation Skills

Friday, September 26, 2025
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM (in person at BRACE Framingham)

This workshop will provide hands-on, experiential activities and theory to address teaching pronunciation to English Language Learners. We will learn about first language interference and strategies to aim at producing native-sounding words. Dr Seuss books have a lot of helpful secrets, let's discuss them! Even native speakers of English teach pronunciation incorrectly, why is that?

Workshop Learning Objectives:

  • Have a bigger bag of tricks to help students train their tongue and mouth to pronounce English words correctly

  • Explore household items that can help students practice

  • Be able to explain how syllable counting is a key element of good pronunciation

Presenter:
Debbie Centamore is the Dean of Students and Volunteer Coordinator for Framingham Adult ESL+, and has been an instructor in the program since 1994. She currently manages the social service function of FAESL+, serving as the Director of Advising. Debbie frequently presents for First Literacy and SABES, has consulted for the International Management Program at Staples and at Bose Corporation Headquarters. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese and loves working with adult educators and students.

This workshop is free to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and ESOL Programs.

First Literacy does not receive any state or federal funding and we work very hard to raise 100% of our budget from private sources. Please consider making a donation to First Literacy so we can continue to offer FREE high quality professional development workshops.
