DESCRIPTION:Bridging the Gap: Innovative Strategies for Adult 
 Math Literacy\n \n \n Friday\, September 25\, 2026
 \n \n 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (online via Zoom)\n \n \n 
 \n This workshop is designed to equip Adult Basic 
 Education (ABE) educators with practical\, learner
 -centered methods to transform math instruction. M
 oving beyond traditional rote memorization\, the s
 ession focuses on fostering a "math-positive" clas
 sroom environment where students are encouraged to
  explore mathematical concepts through inquiry and
  active participation.\n \n \n \n Participants wil
 l gain hands-on experience with strategies such as
  Number Talks and inquiry-based problem-solving\, 
 while learning to differentiate instruction to mee
 t the diverse needs of adult learners. By addressi
 ng the psychological barriers and math anxiety oft
 en present in ABE settings\, the workshop provides
  tools to connect abstract mathematical concepts t
 o real-world applications\, such as personal finan
 ce\, workplace readiness\, and health literacy. Ed
 ucators will leave empowered to help their student
 s build the mathematical confidence and skills nec
 essary to navigate the complexities of daily life.

 \n \n 	\n 	Identify and Mitigate Math Anxiety: Rec
 ognize the psychological barriers adult learners f
 ace with mathematics and implement strategies to c
 reate a low-stress\, "math-positive" learning envi
 ronment.\n \n \n 	\n 	\n 	Facilitate Active Learni
 ng: Demonstrate the ability to lead "Number Talks"
  and inquiry-based problem-solving activities that
  encourage students to think critically rather tha
 n relying on rote memorization.\n \n \n 	\n 	\n 	D
 ifferentiate Instruction: Apply scaffolding techni
 ques and "parallel tasks" to effectively teach cla
 ssrooms with diverse skill levels and educational 
 backgrounds.\n \n \n 	\n 	\n 	Contextualize Mathem
 atics: Adapt abstract mathematical concepts into r
 eal-world scenarios relevant to adult learners\, s
 uch as financial literacy\, workplace measurements
 \, and healthcare data.\n \n \n 	\n \n \n Presente
 r:\n \n \n \n Emmanuel “Manny” Knaggs is an X-Cel 
 Education college prep graduate and a current X-Ce
 l employee. Manny came to X-Cel from Suffolk Count
 y House of Corrections in April 2011. He finished 
 his time at the Brooke House pre-release program\,
  where he started college prep and began to prepar
 e for his Accuplacer test to enter college.  Manny
  graduated from the X-Cel college prep class later
  that year\, and has been teaching math at X-Cel s
 ince September 2011. Manny went on to graduate at 
 Bunker Hill with his Associates Degree in Mathemat
 ics. In addition to teaching ABE math at X-Cel\, h
 e has also taught math boot camps at Bunker Hill C
 ommunity College with much success. He then return
 ed back to school to pursue his Bachelor of Arts i
 n Mathematics. He has been teaching math at X-Cel 
 for 15 years helping students successfully pass th
 eir HiSET/GED exams and prepare for the college pl
 acement which is the called the Accuplacer. \n \n 
 \n \n Micocredential Categories:\n \n \n \n \n 	Fu
 ndamental Skills (F)\n \n \n This workshop is free
  to staff of all Massachusetts non-profit ABE and 
 ESOL Programs.\n \n \n \n First Literacy does not 
 receive any state or federal funding and we work v
 ery hard to raise 100% of our budget from private
